Eket—ACTING Director of Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Mr. Ubong Umoh, yesterday, said the department received zero allocation in the past three years.
Umoh, who disclosed this at the ongoing budget defence, appealed to the state House Committee on Finance and Appropriations to augment the N300 million allocation for the department in the 2018 fiscal year.
He attributed the sorry state of the state fire station at Dominic Utuk Avenue, Uyo, to lack of funds, adding that increasing the allocation will enable the department discharge its responsibilities effectively in 2018.
Umoh, who is also the Chief Fire Fighter in the state, stressed that the N300 million allocation was grossly inadequate, noting: “For the past three years, nothing has been released in terms of funding to the Fire Service by government.”
Also, Committee Chairman, Mr. Usoro Akpanusoh, expressed shock over the revelation and sympathised with the management over their plight.
The lawmakers wondered why such an important government establishment was not able to access funds from government in the past three years and promised the readiness of the committee to look into the matter.
