Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, restructure Nigeria in order to pave way for devolution of powers and resource control.

It also advocated for the creation of what it described as ” a proper Delta State” for Urhobo people and her brothers as well as appointment of an Urhobo man as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The UPU National Executive Council made this known in a communique signed by its President General, Chief Joe Omene at the end of its monthly meeting with kingdom Presidents and Secretaries at Mosogar.

It urged the federal government to address all issues of inequality which gave birth to agitations that prompted the Arewa youths to issue quit notice to the South-Easterners few months back.

The UPU president general also condemned in strong terms all acts of violent agitations and terrorism as well as other forms of threats to the nation’s national security.

It noted that haven x-rayed the political economy of Nigeria, the UPU observed that Urhobos are the most marginalized ethnic nationality in the country, considering the fact that ” We are not only the 5th largest ethnic nationality, but we are the highest supplier of Gas in West Africa.”

The communique read in part : ” The UPU x-rayed the political economy of Nigeria and discovered that Urhobos are the most marginalized ethnic nationality in the entire country, considering the fact that we are not only the 5th largest ethnic nationality, but the highest supplier of Gas in West Africa, a consideration that ought to place Urhobo people at advantaged position in sharing of the national cake.

“This revealed fact, as it stands, the Urhobos only have one Senator at the Senate and so it is disturbing to us. And that not even a ministerial appointment has been given to an Urhobo person is a very disheartening experience, which the federal government need to give prompt attention to.”

It called on the federal government to appoint an Urhobo as the Managing Director of NNPC because the nation’s main source of funds was generated from Urhobo land.
