Edo Assembly summons contractors handling Benin-Auchi Road

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN—Edo State House of Assembly, yesterday, ordered the contractors handling the Benin-Auchi Road to appear before it next week Monday or be arrested.

The charge was given when the Controller of Works in the state, Mr Oke Oweh, appeared before the lawmakers to explain the progress of work on the road which is no longer motorable. Motorists travelling to Ekpoma and Auchi now pass through Agbor in Delta State, a longer route, to get to their destinations.

The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Kabiru Adjoto, had stormed Abuja with his members penultimate week to protest the bad state of the road and appealed to the Federal Government to urgently find solution to the problem, which according to him, had caused great pains to not only indigenes of the state but other Nigerians who ply the road to Abuja.

It was not an easy outing for the state Controller of Works, Engr Oweh, when the lawmakers lambasted him after he failed to give them the cost at which the contract was awarded and the duration of the project.

He, however,  informed the lawmakers that work was ongoing and that the road is much better now than it was due to the ongoing work.

According to him, “You now get to Ekpoma from Benin in one hour and we are still working hard to get the Auchi end done.”
