A robbery suspect, who specialises in robbing churches, identified as Frank, has escaped from Police custody in Akwa Ibom State.
Frank was arrested during a robbery attack on St. Patrick Quasi Catholic Parish Obio Ndot in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State last week.
Vanguard gathered that the suspect escaped from the Police cell, Friday night, through the roof.
He was reportedly caught, beaten and later handed to Ikot Uboh Police Station, Oruk Anam Divisional Headquarters last Tuesday about 2a.m., when the four-man robbery gang went to rob the Catholic church the second time.
It was further gathered that the other three members of his gang escaped.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the same gang had been terrorising Oruk Anam and its environs for some time now.
A resident of Obio Ndot village told Vanguard in confidence, yesterday, that the Catholic Church, robbed by the same gang three Sundays ago, decided to beef up its security.
No suspect escaped—CP
Contacted the state’s Commissioner of Police refuted the claim.
The DPO’s letter, which the CP forwarded to Vanguard read: “No robbery suspect escaped from Oruk Anam Division.
“Rather, there was a case of stealing of an aluminium zinc at Ikot Uboh Police Post in which the arrested suspect was said to have escaped from custody on August 28.
“The ASP in charge did not report the incident until the Station Officer, who took over from him on September 1 , told me. I have liaised with the locals for a re-arrest of the suspect, while those on duty have been defaulted.”
