By Samuel Oyadongha

YENAGOA—IJAW youths from the states of the Niger Delta region have raised the alarm over the rising restlessness and impatience over the Federal Government delay on the actualisation of the pact signed with Niger Delta people on peace and development of the region.

The youths, under the aegis of Ijaw Youths Council, IYC, worldwide, said though the people of the region appeared peaceful and calm, they are becoming agitated and angry over the failure of Federal Government to ensure the immediate commencement of academic activities at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State and actions towards addressing the problem of local refineries,  so as to economically engage the local people.

The Ijaw apex youth body also listed as the source of rising dissent among the people, the non- relocation of the corporate headquarters of oil companies to the Niger Delta and the Ogoni clean-up  in Rivers State.

A statement by Mr Eric Omare, factional President of IYC said: “As the Federal Government through the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs is set to hold its 2nd regular meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta in Akure, Ondo State from September 7 to 14, 2017, IYC worldwide is needed now in the Niger Delta region to sustain the existing peace towards implementing the promises made to the region and not endless meetings and rhetoric.”
