NASS constituency projects not cancelled, but… — FG

By Omeiza Ajayi

ABUJA—Contrary to speculations that the purported bickering between the legislature and the Presidency was a result of  President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s decision to stop funding of constituency projects of federal lawmakers, the federal government has stated that the intervention projects were on course but will only pay for jobs that had been certified  satisfactorily completed.

Acting Secretary to Government of the Federation, Dr Habiba Lawal, stated this at a stakeholders’ interactive forum on the implementation of zonal intervention/constituency projects in Abuja yesterday.

“I will like to affirm that the idea of constituency projects is a noble one conceived to assist members of the National Assembly as elected representatives of the people to facilitate the development of their constituencies.

“The Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, are responsible for the actual implementation of these projects while the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will monitor, evaluate, verify implementation and authorize payment at various stages of execution.

‘’Therefore, payments for contracts under the Zonal Intervention/Constituency Projects will be made based on satisfactory performance in order to ensure value for money.”.

Suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, had in an interview with Vanguard last year, stated that the Buhari administration was not positively disposed to funding of the constituency projects, a statement that worsened the relationship between the Presidency and the federal lawmakers.
