ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has disclosed of its resolve to unveil the the timetable for the forthcoming governorship elections in Eiti and Osun states.
Explaining that it has commenced preparations for the polls, Chairman of the Co
mmission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who announced this Thursday in Abuja at the regular quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners REC, also informed the RECs that the commission would review preparations for the Nov 18 Anambra state governorship elections.
While he acknowledged that 37 political parties had nominated candidates for the Anambra election, Mahmood added that the commission would at the weekend conduct a bye election in Eti-Osa state constituency in Lagos state while it will conduct another bye election into the Kware/Wamakko Federal Constituency in Sokoto state before October.
“Above all, the 2019 General Election is exactly 505 days away from today. The Presidential and National Assembly elections have been fixed for Saturday 16th February 2019 while Governorship, State Assembly and Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections are fixed for 2nd March 2019”, he reminded the RECs many of who were only recently appointed.
The INEC boss also told the RECs that so far, over 2.7 citizens have registered in ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
A breakdown of the figure indicated that over 1.6 million representing 58 per cent were males while 1. 1, translating to 42per cent were females. There are however 108, 752 unclaimed permanent voter cards.
“The commission has also recorded 132,431 requests for transfer from original places of registration to new locations as well as 261,429 requests for replacement of PVCs that were damaged, defaced or wrong entries of personal and other details”.
