Finally, Taraba/Benue agree on border demarcations

By John Mkom

JALINGO—The governors of Taraba and Benue states, Tuesday, agreed on peaceful demarcations of the border between both states, which has caused communal crises for decades, claiming lives and properties worth billion of Naira.

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State and his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom, met at Ugba, headquarters of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, for the resolution to commence the boundary adjustment at the Benue/Taraba boundaries.

The Chairman, Taraba State Council of Chiefs, Aku-Uka of Wukari, Dr. Shakarau Angu, and the paramount ruler, the Tor Tiv, who also doubles as Chairman, Benue State Traditional Council, Professor James Ayatse, and all the local government council chairmen at Taraba/Benue borders, were also actively involved in the demarcation process.

Gov Ishaku admonishes boundaries’ tribes

Presenting his speech at Youth Centre-venue at Ugba, Governor Ishaku of Taraba State called on the people of Takum and Wukari Local Government areas to peacefully embrace the boundary adjustments, a development which he said has caused several communal clashes between the two states in the past.

He said: “Fighting among ourselves will not help us any day. There had been disagreements among the Tiv and Jukun, who have lived together as brothers and sisters since the time of Benue-Plateau.

“Creation of states by the Federal Government was intended to bring development among the people not disunity.

“Myself and Governor Ortom of Benue State have toured the disputed areas. We discussed with those living at the flashpoints of both states and resolved that there should be permanent boundary adjustments.

“There is no better time to do the boundary adjustments than now, for lasting peace and development to thrive within our communities.

“The deputy governors of Taraba and Benue states will head the boundary adjustment committee for effective and peaceful exercise.

“Wherever you find yourself, respect the authorities of the state.

“If as a Jukun man, you find yourself in Benue, you have become the property of Benue State.

“If you are Tiv and you find yourself in Taraba, your responsibilities have become our responsibilities. Both of us have agreed to take these responsibilities effectively.”

Gov Ortom applauds efforts

On his part, Governor Ortom of Benue State applauded both states for their tireless efforts at bringing lasting peace through border adjustments.

Ortom, who read the communique of the boundary adjustment meeting, called on the committee to invite the National Boundary Commission, NBC, to commence the demarcation with immediate effect.

He urged the committee to be fair and just during the exercise to avoid further crisis among the affected communities in Taraba and Benue states.

It will be recalled that the two governors were earlier at Kashimbila village of Takum, Taraba State, to commence the processes that led to the final agreement.
