YENAGOA — Environmental Rights Action, ERA/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria, FoEN, has urged Nigeria Agip Oil Company, NAOC, to as a matter urgency, conduct a Joint Investigation Visit, JIV, on last month oil spillage in Apoi community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
ERA in a report by its field monitors, Akpotu Ziworitin and Alagoa Morris, said though preliminary investigations carried out by the community representatives and NAOC indicate that the spills was caused by equipment failure, it noted that a JIV team should have inspected the ruptured spot and monitor the recovery process as the cause of the spill was important to all stakeholders.
The group also called on NAOC to send relief materials without delays to ameliorate the plight of the people to assuage frayed nerves, noting that the company should reach agreement to take care of individual and general damages if confirmed that the cause of the spill was equipment failure.
It also urged the community to remain vigilant and non violent as the process lingers.
