…It’s invitation to chaos —Tanko Yakassai

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has promised to give a robust response to the invitation from Southern leaders for the renegotiation of the Nigerian federation after studying the proposal.
The ACF’s claim came as Northern elder-statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, dismissed the proposal from the Southern leaders as an invitation to chaos.
Southern leaders had at a meeting in Lagos, weekend, invited Northern leaders to renegotiate the federation on the claim that it was weighted against the South.
Responding to the invitation, ACF spokesman, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, told Vanguard that the forum will respond appropriately after studying the proposal.
Yakassai on his part, however, saw the move by the Southern leaders as an invitation to chaos, saying there was no legal framework for the move.
He said: “Nigeria is covered by constitution, and it clearly spelt out procedures on each item that binds us together and anything outside it is an invitation to chaos.”
Yakassai said any such meeting would amount to “incompetence, and affront on the constitution of the Federal Republic. As it is today, only the National Assembly is empowered by the law to take a stand on any issues concerning constitution amendment, and anything outside it is nullity and rape of the constitution.
“I, for one, would not attend a talkshop that would be tantamount to a waste of energy and resources while the so-called conveners know they are out for mischief.“
He thus enjoined any “aggrieved group to follow the proper channel to achieve their mission.“
