MASTER Durojaiye Oluwasegun Ayomide of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, has won the state finals of the annual Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, national quiz competition, and will represent Lagos at the zonal final on September 22, 2017 in Ado-Ekiti.
Ayomide, with 84 per cent, won first position and was awarded a N100,000 worth of scholarship from NNPC. Dara Ogunmola of New Hall International School, Lekki, and Uwosu Olumide of Lagos State Senior Model College, Kankon, Badagry, with scores of 82.5 and 81 per cent came second and third respectively. Congratulating the winners, the Ag Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omobola Babs-Akinyeye, noted that students of Lagos State-owned schools have been participating and recording successes in the competition since inception in 2001.
Urging Ayomide to study harder so as to win at the zonal and national stages, Babs-Akinyeye said “The competition has laid solid foundation for science development in Nigeria and one encouraging trend observed is that the quality of performance of participating schools has been on the increase since the competition began.”
Speaking earlier, the Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adebayo Ibiyeye, explained that this year’s edition started on July 15 in 10 centers across the state, where the students wrote examinations in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and English Language. Thereafter, 60 best students were selected, three per local government, to participate at the state finals held at Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja.
