Herdsmen in Yobe urge FG to create cattle routes

By Bala Ajiya

DAMATURU—The National President of KULEN Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria, Khalil Mohammed Bello, has called on the Federal Government to create cattle routes and grazing reserves for them, as according to him, it is the only way to put an end to incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen across the country.

“Non-availability of amenities, such as grazing reserves, cattle routes and water for animal consumption, has always led to the clashes of herdsmen and farmers,” he said.

He added that government should be blamed for not providing social amenities for herdsmen and also not including pastoral in their annual budgetary allocations which, if not done, will fuel further clashes between both sides.

On why Fulani were fond of possessing AK-47 rifles, he said: “Anyone caught with a rifle is not our member,” as their members only wield bows and arrows meant for protection of their animals.

Khalid said there was urgent need for the Federal Government to establish grazing reserves as it was in 1965.

“Most of these grazing reserves were gazetted, but are now taken over by government or sold to absentee landlords and are no longer available for cattle grazing purposes,” he noted.

He also called on government to constitute a high level committee to reach out to Fulani and farmers in various parts of the country to resolve the ongoing crisis amicably.
