Kaduna—The National Secretary, Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Sani Dahiru, yesterday, threw its weight behind the call for establishment of ranches, saying it was the only way out of the persistent farmers/herders clashes across the country.
Speaking at a workshop organised by Ahmadu Bello University for farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the 19 northern states in Zaria, Kaduna State, yesterday, Dahiru said relevant governments in the northern states should assist herders to establish ranches.
He said: “Ranch will make them to stay in one place, learn fattening and milk making. This is what National Animal Production and Research Institute, NAPRI, of ABU, Zaria, will assist us on. ”
Earlier, NAPRI’s Director of Breeding and Genetics, Professor Bartholomew Nwagu, noted that conflict arose when farmers encroached on trans-human paths, leading herders to move onto agricultural land.
