BY Innocent Onoja

The Academic and non-academic staff unions of Alvan Ikoku Federal college of Education, Owerri, Imo state have declared a one week warning strike following the decision of the Governing council of the institution to extend the tenure of the Provost, Mrs Blessing Ijeoma who has attained the mandatory 65 years retirement age.

The workers,  who spoke through their spokesperson, Mr Bede Blaise Onwuagboke yesterday in Owerri said: “We the coalition of four unions in the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, under the auspices of joint action committee have declared a one week warning strike to bring to the notice of the general public the recent happenings in the college which if not handled timely and properly may throw the college to avoidable crisis/anarchy.

“Recently, the federal government constituted the 3rd governing council of the college, a development which the college community received with great excitement and expectations.

“However, the joy of the college community was short lived as the rumour of the tenure of the provost being extended beyond her retirement age filled the air”. The workers therefore urged the Governing Council to prevail on the provost to “appropriately proceed on retirement immediately having attained the mandatory age of 65, 2nd of August, 2017 in accordance with the scheme/ condition of service of the college of education system”.

Reacting, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Mr. Alex Hart, said that there was no going back on the tenure elongation of the provost which was in line with the relevant laws.

According to him, “every decision we took was in line with the extent laws of the college and that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. All the documents we laid our hands proved that the provost has a running tenure that would expire in 2018 and it was only lawful that she finishes her constitutional tenure in office.”
