PORT HARCOURT—Over 200 workers of Indorama Eleme Fertilizer Chemicals Limited, IEFCL, yesterday, shut down operations at the company over poor salaries and staff welfare.

The staff, who are mainly the operators of the fertilizer producing plants, pulled out of their duty posts, alleging that the management of the company treats them as slaves.

One of the protesters, Mr. Ibiye, said the company pays them paltry sum as salaries, adding that their remuneration is not commensurate with their services.

Similarly, another staff, Mr. Obanore, said they were not allowed to unionise and get a paltry N3,000 as monthly hazard allowance.

Meanwhile, the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Jossy Nkwocha, said: “As the management, we are open to negotiation.

“We are not used to joining issues with our workers. The issues raised will be resolved as quickly as possible.”
