…As Edo APC blasts PDP, Ize-Iyamu
By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, said yesterday that his administration had resolved to privatize the Specialist Hospital in Benin City with a view to providing world class healthcare services to the people of the state.
He said that the privatization of the hospital will put it at par with the best hospitals in the world and serve the healthcare needs of Edo people and Nigerians who ordinarily would have travelled abroad for such services.
Obseki stated this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between the state government and the Catholic Relief Services, CRS, which will provide over two million treated mosquito nets for Edo citizens.
His words: “We are going to invest massively in our primary healthcare system. That is why we appointed the Deputy Governor, Mr Philp Shaibu, to head the Edo State Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Net Campaign Committee.”
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress , APC, in Edo State, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, were confused about the policies and programmes of the Governor Obaseki- led administration in the state, noting that their recent Supreme Court defeat was “still affecting their psyche.”
The party stated this yesterday, through the member representing Owan federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Pally Iriase and Secretary of the APC in the state, Lawrence Orka while reacting to the allegation by the state PDP that the Obaseki-led administration intends to privatize the Central Hospital and other government parastalstals in the state.
According to Orka “I think the PDP and their candidate are still suffering the impact of the Supreme Court defeat. They are confused and they felt telling lies against the governor will help them but it is over for them and they will continue to lament while Obaseki will continue to give his best to Edo people.”
Addressing journalists in Benin City, yesterday, Iriase who also is the Deputy Majority Whip in the House of Representatives, said “I don’t like criticising just for the sake of it. PDP must know what the issues are before they start criticising because I am not aware that five star hospital has been put up for sale and they must know that this APC government is not like theirs when they were in power where privatisation was another ploy for cornering the common wealth by those who they are supposed to protect. And that is why we have the kind problems and rot now.
“The privatisation is to serve the interest of the people and not the person privatising for the good of all, so I don’t know the lies being told by the PDP. Their tantrums are very ill conceived because when you say you want to privatise, what is the man proposing, you probably do not know what the man has in mind. Concessioning.”
