YENAGOA—A 50-year-old man is in Bayelsa State police trouble for allegedly defiling a 15-month-old child in the Swali suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital.
The suspect, identified as Oku Ekanem, was arrested by the men of the state Anti-Crime Squad code-named Operation Doo Akpo.
It was gathered that the accused was caught in the act around 1a.m., Monday, by the child’s mother, one Mrs Blessing Joshua, who is also the Ekanem’s lover.
Mrs Joshua, the 40-year-old mother of the victim, while narrating what happened, said: “It happened on Monday at about 1a.m. I was watching television with my neighbour till late in the night and retired to bed at about 1a.m.

“Not long after I heard the screaming of my child and ran to the room, but was shocked when I saw him defiling my child. He claimed it was the work of the devil and I told him that this would be the last time the devil will use him and that I will take the matter serious.
“He pleaded and barricaded the door to prevent me from calling neighbours. But I tricked him and ran outside with my child to call a police patrol team at a nearby junction.
“He was arrested, but he denied the act. But tests carried out at the hospital showed otherwise.”
