PORT HARCOURT—  Protesting labour leaders, yesterday, shut down offices of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED,  in all its areas of operations in Rivers, Bayelsa , Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

As at 7a.m., the labour leaders, under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEAC, took over the premises of the Disco on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, chanting solidarity songs.

They mounted speakers and had a disc jokey blaring popular Nigerian hit songs as the unionists danced.

Deputy National Secretary  of the union, Mr Oke Nwosu, told Vanguard that the protest was against casualisation and poor service by the distribution company.

He said that they had made efforts in the past to resolve the issues with the firm,  adding that the  firm ignored all letters to it for discussion with the union.

He said that the protest will continue until the firm heeds their demands, adding that the firm has no condition of service for its workers, as staff are sacked at will.

“Nobody will like to disrupt any body’s  business, but the fact remains that the investor, PHED apart from the fact that they are naive on what to do.”
