Ibadan—A collapsed building at 19 Kobiowu Crescent, Iyanganku GRA in Ibadan, yesterday, left one person dead with nine others sustaining serious injuries.
It was learned that the quick response of other workers at the site that saved the lives of those who survived the incident.
According to information, the bricklayers were working on the building, when it suddenly gave way. While some noticed the signs of imminent collapse of the building and escaped, others were not that lucky as the building collapsed on them.
Vanguard further gathered that all the nine survivors were rushed to Ibadan Central Hospital, Ososami, Ibadan, while the deceased was taken to the mortuary.
An eyewitness account stated that out of six different structures that are under construction at the site, two of them caved in. The survivors prevented journalists from taking pictures of the collapsed buildings.
At the Ibadan Central Hospital, where the injured persons were rushed to, some of them had been discharged while others were seen on the hospital beds with their bodies covered with dust from the rubble of the collapsed building.
One of the workers said: “The incident occurred around 9:30a.m. The total number of workers at the site were 10. We noticed that pebbles were falling from the building, followed by blocks. Some of us saw it and ran.
“Others, who were injured, tried to escape but it was too late as the building caved in on them. They cried for help. We rushed to the scene and rescued nine persons alive.
“But the 10th person died because he was deep down in the rubble. Help could not reach him on time.”
