THE trio, Naija Mathematics Olympiad, Dragnet Solutions Limited and the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter have introduced an online Mathematics platform to boost students’ performance in Mathematics.
Speaking at the unveiling of the 2017 Mathematics competition among junior secondary students and senior secondary school students in Lagos, the Director, Mathematics Laboratory Limited, Andy Akhigbe said that the initiative will enabled students from primary schools to junior and senior schools learn Mathematics, administer test and be rewarded in the process.
According to him, this is the first time students in Lagos State would be tested in Mathematics competition through the Computer Based Test, CBT.
He said: “The Naija Mathematics Olympiad offers students three specific platforms to practice, test and reward.’’
Akhigbe who explained that the Mathematical training would be conducted in computer based testing said, “It will afford candidates the privilege to use the platform to practice mathematical questions over and over again through a self-learning process.’’ Where candidates are having difficulties in any topic, online mentors are available to explain and solve difficult topics for candidates. ‘’Students who registered for the contest will be given access to interact with online teachers who will put them through in difficult mathematical topics.’’
He also noted that the Test aspects will provide candidates with the privilege to use the platform to stimulate an actual test environment to increase proficiency in learning.
Mystery of the Mathematics
After a student has gained a mystery of the Mathematics, he added that such candidate who registered with N3,000 would be free to take a Mathematics Olympiad contest with other smart students and be rewarded in the process.
He said: ‘’It is a system where kids can go online, practice, test themselves and then also schedule themselves for an exam with other smart kid and be rewarded in the process. This is done to demystify maths and take away any form of phobia that as been attached to the subject.’’
Explaining its uniqueness, he said: ‘’It affords a child the opportunity to do self learning, as he does not need any teacher or any body. ”On his own, the student clicks and sees the questions, answer them, if his wrong, the question will show him how it can be solved.
‘’It also affords the student to sit in a test environment and test himself, come out and check how good he is with other kids. ‘’No mathematics competition in Nigeria offers any of this.
””You can practice free, and you can test your self free and that does not attract a kobo. But when you say I want to go into a competition with this group then you have to pay because those test centres are not free, its like going to write JAMB.”
He said that the first phase of the Naija Mathematics Olympia contest is slated on 25th of March at 12 noon.
The Director, disclosed that the sponsors of the 2017 Naija Mathematics Olympiad were; Tino Electronics which provides six flat-screen televisions and Cheth Limited, which also provides six educational tablets.
