The family of late Lekan Salami through the Lekan Salami Foundation weekend donated mosquito treated nets valued at over N70 million to three University Teaching Hospitals across the country including Internally Displaced Camps (IDP) in Borno State.

At the presentation of 2,000 pieces of the nets to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH in Lagos by the spokesperson of the family, Mr. Owolabi Salami, as part of the 30th anniversary of the death of their father,  he said other beneficiaries include; University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan UTH); Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ife; and the Internally Displaced Camps (IDP) in Borno State.

Owolabi, who noted that their late father was associated with a lot of noble initiatives and projects in Nigeria particularly, football and to a great extent, politics, said they believe that there have been too many cases of individuals coming out of surgeries and other treatments who are meant to be in recuperation and then have to deal with complications arising out of mere mosquito bites.

According to him, the donation would go a long way in assisting those individuals from contracting malaria, and by extension reducing the cost of medical services that LUTH has to provide within its constraint.

Responding, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode, expressed gratitude to the kind gesture and philanthropy of the family.

“It always warms my heart to see Nigerians that give. There are so many reasons why we give and in this situation, they are remembering their late father- a philanthropist, sportsman and a politician. His name will always be written in bold letters in the annals of this country. I am happy that you the children have taken after him.

“If there are more Nigerians who give to the needy like he had done, Nigeria will surely be a better place. The good book says that it is better to give than to receive and there are blessings for them because the kingdom of God is not much more than that.  What is life all about?

How many material things do one has to have before he realizes that he should give to those that don’t have?

In other places you get to, you see structures built and maintained by individuals, families and so on, in memory of one person or the other. I want that to happen in LUTH; I want Nigerians to give to this hospital because any of us can be brought here anytime.”

He further assured that the nets shall be put to good use for the betterment of the patients and promotion of healthcare.
