A 32-year-old hotel cleaner, Veronica Lawrence, who allegedly stole a lodger’s 550 euros (N230,000), was, yesterday, charged before an Igbosere magistrate’s court in Lagos.
Lawrence is standing trial on a charge of stealing, but pleaded not guilty and was granted N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
The prosecutor, Inspector Igonbo Emby, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 25 between 9.15a.m. and 12.18p.m. at a hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos.
Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the magistrate, Mr. Martins Owumi, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The section provides that any clerk or servant who steals the property of his employer, is liable on conviction to seven years imprisonment.
He said the sureties, who must be gainfully employed, should also show evidence of three years tax payment to Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until April 3 for mention.
He said the accused entered the room where the complainant, Sophia Sabrof, was lodging and stole his money.
