Apple launches iPhone 7 Red to help fight AIDS

Apple on Monday launched the Red Special Edition of the iPhone7 and the iPhone 7 plus to support the fight against HIV/AIDs in Africa.

According to Apple CEO, Mr. Tim Cook, the move was made to consolidate the tech giant’s partnership with RED, a global fund which provides people living with HIV access to life-saving ARV medication across sub-Saharan Africa.

With the new development, a percentage of proceeds from every red device sold will go to the group which in turn donates 100 percent of its earnings to the fight against AIDs. Proceeds from RED would be in addition to the $130 million Apple has donated since the partnership began in 2007.

According to Cook: “Since we began working with RED 10 years ago, our customers have made a significant impact in fighting the spread of AIDS through the purchase of our products. The introduction of this special edition iPhone is our biggest RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with RED, and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands.”

Apple is the world’s largest corporate donor to the Global Fund, contributing more than $130 million of the over $465 million generated by the organisation since inception.
