BIRNIN KEBBI——KEBBI State government says it has supported 10,000 farmers in the state in the production of soya beans, maize and sorghum under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme initiated by Federal government.
The Anchor Borrowers’ Programme is one of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policy initiatives to reduce food imports, create jobs and diversification of the economy.
Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Garba Mohammed Dandiga, who made this known in Birnin Kebbi, said the benefiting farmers were already provided with necessary in-puts for the immediate production of the commodities.
He said the farmers were drawn from Zuru, Danko/Wasagu, Fakai, Ngaski, Koko/Besse and Bagudo local government areas of the state.Dandiga recalled that last year, the Anchor Borrower Programme had stimulated local production of commodities and brought back lots of people in the state to farming.
He said it was gratifying that the effort has yielded the desired results as the import bill on agricultural commodities has declined and there is self sufficiency in rice. Dandiga called on citizens to exercise patient with present administration in its efforts to feed the nation through farming.
