ENUGU— South- East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has raised alarm over what it alleged as desperate moves by other political parties in Anambra State to hijack the 2017 governorship election by cloning the Permanent Voters’ Cards, PVCs, in the state.
The party, therefore, called for vigilance in the state. National Vice Chairman of PDP, South East zone, Chief Austin Umahi, while addressing party stakeholders, described the allegation as desperation by other political parties, maintaining that PDP shall resist any further attempt to deny the people of the state their choice governor on the platform of PDP in this year’s governorship election.
Umahi said the party had commenced voters’ sensitization and reconciliation to enable it win the election, adding that the party was putting final touches on programmes and activities in ensuring that the next governor of Anambra State is elected on the platform of PDP.
He said the idea of the voters’ sensitization was to enable the party reach out to her members across the state as well to get them informed of their rights during and after the governorship election and how to protect their PVCs from being cloned by “desperate politicians.”
Umahi stated that PDP was not losing sleep over recent defection of some persons to All Progressives Congress, APC, noting that what the party is doing for now is to concentrate on the Anambra governorship election which is the closest election in sight.
He said: “The idea is to use Anambra which is very critical to Ndigbo to launch PDP ‘s come-back and we are not leaving any stone unturned as we march forward into the election with a credible candidate that will beat both the incumbent APGA and APC.
“We have informed the national body of the party of our desire to regain our lost grip on Anambra which is the centre of Igbo survival and the responses we are getting from the state are very healthy for this project.”
“As it stands now, it is only PDP that is healthy and peaceful party in Anambra state and South East in general as both APGA and APC have been neck deep in intractable crises resulting in two leaders of the party taking each other to the cleaners which is a sign of desperation meeting frustration,” said Umahi.
