School for Gifted Children to Open in Abuja Municipality

ABUJA – Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has said it is collaborating with professionals from the Ministries of Education and Federal Capital Territory for the design and development of a school for gifted and talented children due to open in September 2017.

AMAC Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu Candido, disclosed this while briefing the media on the council’s plan to develop the talent and capacities of children within the municipality.

He said the talent school is central to the council’s push to educating elementary-age children who perform at “exceptionally high levels” relative to their age and environment.

He said: “We intend to have a School for the Gifted and Talented. We are already consulting with relevant stakeholders and we will hit the ground running from February. By God’s grace, the school should be ready by June/July; so that by September, the identified talents across Abuja municipality will have been admitted.

“The council will screen children for gifted ability in four areas: superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability in subject areas, creativity in thinking and superior ability in visual and/or performing arts,” he said.
