OBIARUKU—POLICE in Delta State, yesterday, arrested a young man allegedly masquerading as a lunatic for attempting to kidnap and kill two children in Obinomba community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state.
It was learned that the cutlass-brandishing suspect had seized the children, who are between the ages of eight and 10, along the Utagba-Unor/Umukwaka Road of the community, inflicting cuts on the head of one of them.
A source in the community said: “For the past two months, we have been seeing this man pretending to be a madman in the area and he spends his nights in one of the uncompleted buildings in the neighbourhood.
“This morning (yesterday), an Okada rider and his female passenger saw him struggling with the children. He had already cut one of them with his cutlass, while the other one managed to escape.
“The Okada rider and his passenger raised alarm and residents started trooping in to rescue the child, but he was chasing them away with his cutlass.
“When the situation was getting out of hands, one of the residents had to call the police at Obiaruku with his mobile phone. Policemen immediately mobilised to the scene, over-powered him, forced him into their vehicle and drove him to the police station.”
He said the boy, who was injured, was later taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed that the suspect was in detention, adding that it was not an incident of kidnap.
He said the suspect could not be said to be a madman, but had been exhibiting violent tendencies in the community.
