How a Nigerian student built a platform that connected over 50,000 students

In the ever-evolving world of technology, where social networking platforms are often dominated by global giants like Facebook and Twitter, a young Nigerian student dared to challenge the status quo.

Uwabor Henry Segun, a student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), saw a pressing need among his fellow students one that global platforms had overlooked. His response? The creation of RealmIII (R3), Africa’s first social networking platform designed exclusively for students.

FOUNDER & CEO: UWABOR HENRY SEGUN

A Vision Born Out of Necessity

In 2012, upon entering FUNAAB, Henry quickly realized a gap in student life there was no efficient way for students to connect, collaborate, or promote their skills within their own academic communities. Entrepreneurs and artists struggled to showcase their talents, while students faced difficulties in accessing resources and networking beyond their immediate circles.

Determined to bridge this gap, Henry conceptualized RealmIII, a digital ecosystem designed to foster student engagement, collaboration, and business promotion. To bring his vision to life, he recruited fellow student and tech enthusiast Adetunji Falola Damilola as a co-founder. Together, they embarked on a journey that would redefine campus interactions in Nigeria.

A Game-Changer for Student Networking

By 2015, RealmIII had launched with an overwhelming response. Within just three years, the platform had amassed over 57,000 active users across multiple Nigerian universities, making it the largest indigenous social networking platform ever built by students, for students.

Unlike mainstream social media platforms, RealmIII was tailored specifically for the Nigerian student experience. It allowed users to:

Create professional and personal profiles.

Connect with fellow students within and beyond their universities.

Promote entrepreneurial ventures and artistic talents.

Organize and vote in real-time for campus events and competitions.

It wasn’t long before the platform began making waves beyond FUNAAB. Students from universities across Nigeria, eager to engage in a network designed for their unique needs, rapidly signed up. RealmIII had created a digital movement, a first of its kind in Africa.

Driving Social and Economic Impact

Beyond virtual connections, RealmIII became a catalyst for social change and student empowerment. Henry and his team organized impactful initiatives, including:

The First-Ever Campus Dance Competition: The event revolutionized entertainment in a school previously seen as ‘boring.’ Students voted live on the RealmIII app and website to determine winners, making it one of the most interactive competitions ever held in Nigerian universities.

Free Transportation for Students: During Nigeria’s economic downturn, when students struggled to afford transportation to school, RealmIII funded a free bus service to ease the financial burden on students.

R3 Giveaways: The team provided foodstuffs, provisions, and essential supplies to students struggling financially, proving that technology could be a tool for both connection and social good.

National Recognition and Awards

As RealmIII’s impact grew, so did its accolades. In 2016, the platform was honored with Students’ Choice Best Social Media Platform at the Annual Nigerian University Crest Awards (ANUCA). It also won Best Social Networking Company at the Nigeria Meritorious Awards (NIGMA) a testament to its profound influence.

A Legacy of Innovation

Henry Uwabor’s journey with RealmIII exemplifies the power of student-led innovation. From an idea sparked by campus frustrations to a national success story, his determination and ingenuity paved the way for what many call “Nigeria’s answer to Facebook”.

Henry’s hopes to continue to contribute to tech innovation to inspire young entrepreneurs across the World. His story is not just about building a platform it’s about revolutionizing digital solutions that can thrive in an ever-globalizing world.
