THE LAW OF BELIEF

“Whatever you believe with emotion and conviction becomes your reality”.

This law presupposes that your reality is a reflection of your belief system.

Once upon a time, a man was arrested and shut up in a dungeon in his castle by some Barons. The jailer carried with him a great key a foot long leading the man into a dark hole. The man was in the dark dungeon for twenty years. Every day the big door would be opened by the jailer who came in to deliver a pitcher of water and a loaf of bread to the prisoner and immediately the door was shut up again. After twenty years, the prisoner could no longer bear his circumstance; he preferred dying to living in such a miserable condition. However, he did not want to commit suicide. He had a plan; he decided to attack the jailer the next day and in self-defense the jailer would kill him. He went ahead to examine the door in preparation for the execution of his plan. The prisoner caught the door handle and turned it; lo and behold: the door was opened. And after closely examining the door he discovered that there was no lock upon it and never had there been any.

Therefore, he found his way out of the dungeon, he encountered several armed guards but none of them paid any attention to him; he walked out a free man.5

Here’s the catch; all through those twenty years the door of the prison was opened but in the man’s mind it was locked up and as long as he thought and believed in that direction he remained in bondage. The problem was not in the circumstance he found himself rather the problem was in his own mind. Whatever, you believe to be true becomes true for you and it defines your reality even if it is a false belief. It is the mind that imprisons; it is also the mind that sets free. And the key to your freedom or bondage lies in the belief system you have chosen to adopt.

“Men are not prisoners of fate; they are prisoners of their own mind”6

FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT.
The condition of your life is determined by the condition of your belief system. You will always think and behave in ways consistent with your belief system. Your habits, your philosophy of life, and the way you treat others all emanates from your beliefs. Your beliefs set the limit of your abilities and capabilities and your experiences. Your inner world of beliefs creates the outer world of realities. Your world view; life-view; self-view; people-view are all molded at your core-your belief system-and the shape your actuality or reality. Our beliefs dictate what we can or cannot do; it is the convictions that lead us in making choices in life; it filters our experiences and distills the quality of our lives. Beliefs can create and destroy; it can bring to death or it can make alive; it makes and unmake; it can create endless possibilities or it can cause limitless impossibilities.

“If you think you are beaten you are;
If you think you dare not, you don’t;
If you want to win but think you can’t
It’s almost a cinch you won’t,
If you think you’ll lose you’re lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind.
Life’s battle don’t always go
To the stronger and faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.7

It is not our environment that defines us neither is it the events of our lives that control the outcome of our lives rather it is the belief that we attach to the environment and the interpretation we give to the events that determines what we will become and what we can do.

SOARING ABOVE THE CEILING OF LIMITATIONS
A young eaglet was put in a cage and allowed to grow there while receiving nourishment and care. When the eaglet reached maturity and turned into an eagle, the ceiling of the cage was opened. Guess what! The eagle couldn’t soar out of the cage. The reason was simple; he had the ability and potential to soar but was unable because he had been mentally conditioned to stay in the cage. The eagle’s problem was self-imposed limitation. Therefore, many people are stuck with what they are and where they are because of past conditioning and not because of lack of opportunity or fate. In fact, we see life not as it is but as we’ve been conditioned to see it. The belief we have of ourselves and our abilities will determine our performance. Most of the limitations that stop us right on our track towards success are internal; self-imposed. External limitations can be conquered by anyone if only the individual can conquer the limitations within his or her mind. Nothing is impossible to the one who discovers the limitless power within. It has been said, there is no such thing as an unrealistic vision or goal only unrealistic timeframes.

Self-imposed limitations have its precedence on self-limiting beliefs. Belief is being persuaded about a particular thing. It is the conviction you hold about yourself and your world. Belief is a mental acceptance of certain thoughts or ideas. Self-limiting belief is a restricted view or perspective about who you are and what you are capable of doing; it confines not only your life but also your world view into your self-made “box”. Beliefs set the boundaries of your life experience. Your life can never rise above the set of beliefs you chose to uphold. Beliefs determines your attitude, behaviour and results through life. Beliefs cuts across every aspect of life; your finances, relationships, career, health, happiness and your entire life are a reflection of your beliefs.

We can safely say, your beliefs determines if you are rich or poor, if you are happy or unhappy, if you enjoy your relationships or endure your relationships and if you are successful or unsuccessful. Everyone has a philosophy that guides his life; a set of core beliefs. Unfortunately, most people do not consciously choose the beliefs that they have allowed to rule their lives. From infancy upward we take in information from various sources around us. We take in the teachings, feelings and experiences we were exposed to. As we grew into adulthood we have gathered beliefs about money, health, relationships, marriage, work and every important aspect of life. However, many of the information we take in and accept which have become our beliefs do not empower our destiny but rather handicaps it. Many of these beliefs place a ceiling on who we can be, what we can do and what we can have. Self-limiting belief has its premise on fear and doubt. Fear and doubt is one of success most deadly enemies; it stabs creativity, cripples the power of imagination, incapacitates ability and potentials and undermines self-worth. Doubt places limits on intelligence, capability and confidence. Fear attracts the things we dread and handicaps our ability to take appropriate actions and control of our lives.

Negative beliefs for the most part originates from how you interpret your past experiences, your upbringing, childhood experiences, people’s opinion of you especially people that are close to you and those that you respect and trust. The root of these negative beliefs is negative thought patterns. And you can change your self-limiting beliefs by questioning and replacing your thought patterns into a positive one. The good news is that you do not have to accept other people’s opinion of you as your reality. Examine your thought patterns: What are your beliefs about money? What are your beliefs about success or business? What are your beliefs around love and relationships? What are your beliefs about your abilities, intelligence and your life? What beliefs do you have about the world, people and the challenges of life? Do you believe you deserve and can achieve your dreams? Are your beliefs in line with your goals? Therefore, if you want to change your reality in any aspect of your life, change your beliefs in regards to that area of life.

Refuse to be chained down by popular belief. We tend to believe what everybody else believes in. We choose to move along with popular opinion about ourselves and about what is possible; we are crowd-driven rather than self-driven. Hence, our destinies become stunted because we do not maximize the potentials that the Creator had invested in us; we end up living a life of mediocrity.

Two men are crippled with polio, one of them allows the event to control his life, he believes that there is nothing great about his life after all both legs are paralyzed, so he remains as an invalid on the side line of destiny begging through life. However, the other man believed that no matter the event of his life he was in control of his destiny and he believed the best of himself.

The paralyzed man contested and believed that he will win the seat of the president of the United States of America. Though his dream seemed impossible because of his physical condition, he laid hold on the prize. His name was Franklin Roosevelt. Your accomplishment in life cannot rise higher than the set of beliefs you choose to uphold.
Therefore, release yourself from the prison of limitations and soar to limitless height by adopting empowering beliefs.
