GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has presented a bill for the amendment of the Primary Health Care Development Law 2015 to the state House of Assembly.

Former Governor of Delta State Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has bemoaned the state of critical care in the country, stating that 43 years after the first Intensive Care Unit, ICU, was established in Nigeria, critical care in the country is still in its infancy.

LAST week, reports of cases of malnourished children at the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps in Borno State, caused a stir. Footages of persons in the camps suffering from acute malnutrition, were displayed by the Doctors Without Borders- (Médecins Sans Frontières), MSF. The photographs were accompanied by reports that an average of eight children were dying daily from malnutrition in the state.

A Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Professor Abayomi Somefun, has raised alarm over high prevalence of hearing disorder, disclosing that over 8.5 million of the population suffer from the problem. Somefun identified children as the most vulnerable group to ear defects. He said no fewer than 3.5 million Nigerian children have hearing problems.

On this year’s International World Drug Day, stakeholders have raised alarm over the rising cases of drug abuse in Nigeria, describing the trend as a threat to nation building. This is coming on the heels of the 2015 report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, which estimates that 246 million people, or 1 in 20 people between the ages of 15 and 64 years, consumed an illicit drug in 2013. Findings show that many Nigerians youths are now being exposed to drugs earlier in life.
