Have you ever wondered how much of your past romantic/sexual life you need to reveal as your relationship progresses with marriage in the picture? Are you bothered about how your future spouse might react to something unpleasant that you may have done before you met? Past relationships can be a sensitive topic to discuss with your future partner. On the one hand, being open and honest lays the foundation for a stable and healthy relationship built on trust, but on the other hand, going into vivid details about your romantic past may seem awkward and may be like opening the Pandora’s Box. This has been an issue of concern in relationships… As usual, we sought the views of celebrities and their responses are as follows:

Th past should remain in the past- DeeOne, Comedian

It is better you tell it yourself than let your partner hear it from another source. But I believe the past should remain in the past. I will reveal my past depending on how far I know she can handle it. Whatever I know she can’t handle, I won’t even raise it, let alone discussing it. Some things are better left unsaid.

Because he’s spending the rest of his life with me, i think he should know all there is to know about me. It will also build his trust in  me. There’s no place for secrecy in marriage. It’s better to be open about everything.

It depends on the kind of man he is- Seyi Hunter, Actress

Revealing my past to my future spouse will depend on the kind of man I end up with. If he’s understanding, I will tell him every dirty secret, but if he’s not , he’ll actually believe he married the ‘Mother of Jesus’, I will simply tell him what he wants to hear. I don’t want a man that will always remind me of my past or use it as a ‘ringtone’ when I make a little mistake… So, it all depends on the type of man I end up with.

Some things are better left unsaid- Nazareth Bako Jesse, Actress

Everyone has a past. I will reveal the part of my past that is already known and leave out the rest, because we are all humans. Some of our pasts are so delicate that it can ruin our future. I believe once you reconcile that past with God, it should be forgotten because it is now between you and God. Though there are parts of your past that your spouse need to know about, because they have a way of coming back to you if not properly handled. Revealing your past to your future spouse could also be a way to test him to see if he’s really your life partner. If he is, he will put himself in your shoes and try to understand that it’s your past. Sometimes, talking is like opening a wound that has healed. Nobody should remain in the past.
