Warri—NATIONAL Treasurer of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Union, NUPENG, Mr. Williams Akporeha, yesterday, in Warri, Delta State, described the inauguration of United Labour Congress of Nigeria ULC, and the emergence of Joe Ajaero and Igwe Achese as President and Deputy President, respectively, as a major step to giving hope to workers and rescuing the masses from oppression.

Addressing union leaders in the state at their annual general meeting in Warri, Akporeha, said:  “Permit me to use this opportunity on behalf of the trade unions in Delta State to congratulate the President, Mr. Ajaero, his Deputy, Mr.  Igwe, as well as other national leaders and affiliate unions for a successful inaugural delegate’s conference of the United Labour Congress, ULC.

“The formation of ULC is a significant development in the history of industrial relations in Nigeria. For the first time, Nigerian workers are being offered an opportunity for a flexible structure in labour movement with one united federation devoid of undue stratification.

“The need for the formation of a unified federation of trade unions that will truly stand to defend and cater for the interest and welfare of the Nigerian worker is really long overdue. The efforts and courage of the leaders for this historic inauguration are, therefore, commendable.”
