Hirse was kidnapped by armed men on November 20 in front of the residence of Mallam Mamman Daura, the Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS) as he visited to condole with Daura over the demise of former Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Ibrahim Dasuki. Daura is married to the daughter of  Dasuki.

Kaduna State police spokesman, ASP Aliyu Usman, told Sunday Vanguard that Hirse had been rejoined with his family and that he was in good health.

He declined to mention if any ransom was paid.

Asked if any ransom was paid to secure the former minister’s release, he said, “I am not aware”.
