ABAKALIKI—AMUDO community in Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi State was last weekend agog with celebrations following the wedding ceremony of 81 couples that took place in the area.

South East Voice learned that the community has never witnessed such a tremendous gathering in the history of the community.

It was an awesome moment for friends, family members and guests as 81 couples walked down the aisle and exchanged marital vows.

The venue, St Paul’s Catholic Church, Amudo, was decorated and adorned with beautiful apparels that depicted a momentous occasion.

Speaking during the mass wedding ceremony, the Parish Priest of St Paul’s Catholic Church, Rev Fr. Matthew Opoke called on the couples to emulate Christ by living exemplary lives for their children to follow.

He said the office of husband and wife as instituted by God is a very delicate one which should be lived in such a way that God will be glorified.

Fr. Opoke thanked the sponsor of the 2016 mass wedding, Chief Chibuike Orogwu (Baby Oku) for bankrolling all the expenses of the wedding and called on the couples to continue to live in love as the family remains the nucleus of the society.

Speaking after the wedding, the Sponsor of the wedding, Chief Chibuike Orogwu said his love for his people was what pushed him to sponsor the couples’ weeding.

He said he will continue to live for the people, especially the downtrodden, adding that the 2016 mass wedding was very unique in the sense that never in the history of the community had such number consented to go to altar for marriage.

He described the marriage institution as a very critical instrument of evangelism noting that every couple has an immediate society to influence positively and urged the couples to live in peace.

The international businessman further commended the people of Amudo for renouncing paganism and embracing Christianity, which he said is the right and sure way to happiness and a fulfilled life.

He used the occasion to organize the reception for the 81 couples and distributed gift items to them while wishing them a happily married life.

In their separate speeches, Mr. and Mrs. Basil Okwuru expressed happiness at the honour done to them by the sponsor by accepting to pay for  and sponsor their wedding.

They expressed happiness that with the recent development, their joy is  complete as they can now live happily like married couples after many years.
