By Festus Ahon
THE Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr John Nani has said that the proposed Delta State Climate change policy would not only reduce greenhouse gas emission but also earn the state carbon credits which would serve as a window for international funding for the State to vigorously pursue climate change mitigation action plans.
Nani gave the hint recently while speaking on the efforts of the DState government in climate change mitigation at the ongoing 22nd United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCC) tagged Cop22 holding in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Nani who was addressing world leaders and critical stakeholders in Climate Change accros the world, said “the Senator Ifeanyi Okowa led Delta State government places high premium on climate change mitigation strategies and has further propose a very comprehensive document on action plans on climate change mitigation which is being reviewed by the State ministry of justice.
“our environment is prone to oil exploration and mining which are the core agents of greenHouse gas emission and with serious depletion of our forest reserve, there is high premium on greenHouse gas reduction as the propose policy aimed to reduce gas flaring, vehicle emission and depletion of forest reserve. the policy will also provide a legal platform for increased forest protection funds and tree planting”
“The commitment of the state government will result in increased use of renewable energy (wind, solar, biomass) and combined heat and power installations using Best Available Technology (BAT); improved energy efficiency in buildings, industry, household appliances; reduction of CO2 emissions from cars transiting the state using Best Available Technology (BAT) in vehicle emission monitoring; abatement measures in the manufacturing industry; and measures to reduce emissions from landfills”, he added.
While harping on the need for the world to take urgent actions against climate change and its impacts, through the robust implementation of the SDG16 which harper on partnership, he seek for adequate funding from developed Nations and other international partners.
Nani said: “We are determined to mobilize the means required to implement the climate change policy through a revitalised Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focussed in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people. The interlinkages and integrated nature of the UNFCC are of crucial importance in ensuring that the purpose of Cop22 is realised. If we realize our ambitions across the full extent of climate change mitigation, our environment will be profoundly improved and our world will be transformed for the better.”
