LAGOS—ORGANISED labour, yesterday, joined unions worldwide to mark the World Day for Decent Work, by embarking on a solemn protest march against what they described as “the challenging issue of precarious work in Nigeria.”
In his address during the protest, Deputy President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, President of NUPENG and Chairman, Nigeria Council of Industrial Global Union, Mr. Igwe Achese said: “Precarious work is a situation where there are no clear terms and conditions of employment. It leads to, among others, inferior job status, lack of job security, low and uncertain wages, casual engagement, and breakdown of family structures and values.”
Bearing placards with inscriptions such as “We need decent jobs not casual engagements,” “Together we can stop precarious work” and “Organise, join union,” the solemn march began from Yaba, through Ojuelegba, Tejuosho and back to Yaba, with Achese and executive members of all affiliate unions leading the procession.
