Invasion, capture of judges ‘re executive lawlessness – Rights group

WARRI – THE Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, FHRACC, Warri, Delta State, on Sunday, criticized the “Gestapo-style” invasion of the homes and arrest of two Supreme Court and Federal High Court judges by the Department of State Services, DSS saying it was the “height of executive lawlessness.”

The group in a statement by the national president, Alaowei Cleric Esq., said: “The arrest of the judges and the failed attempt to abduct a judge in Rivers state is an invasion of the citadel of justice.”

“This is a desecration of the sacred temple of justice by the executive arm, which is supposed to be the custodian of the rule of law having been constitutionally empowered to enforce the law.

“There is no justification whatsoever for this act of impunity by security agencies, who are acting on the orders of the executive head. This is the height of executive lawlessness. Nigeria is now turning into a banana republic where the rule of law has been consigned in the dustbin,” FHRACC asserted.

The group said: “President Muhammadu Buhari must call his overbearing security operatives to order before things get out of order. These unlawfully and unconstitutionally sordid acts of enforcing the law must be stopped. Nigeria is practicing a constitutional democracy; therefore, the executive acts must be in consonance with the rule of law.”

“There are laid down procedures to enforcing the law of the land and President Buhari’s anti graft war cannot be an exception. You cannot come to invade judge premises like a common criminal in the name of anti-corruption war without first availing the laid down processes.

“Were the judges invited by any of these marauding security forces that they failed to honour such invitation? Or were they at any time obstructed the cause of justice to justify these unwholesome invasions and arrest? It said.

The group added: “People of goodwill must rise to defend our democracy. An air of dictatorship, despotism and autocracy has permeated our democratic certain and it is only the voice of the masses that can save Nigeria democracy from the imminent collapse. “

“President Buhari who was one of the key players in dethroning democracy in our country did not value the democracy Nigerians have sacrificed to get. We, therefore, call on all lovers of democracy in the country to rise in the defence of our democracy. This is clearly a mission to truncate the democracy in the country.

“How many of President Buhari’s aides, who have been accused and or indicted of corruption has DSS invaded? How many has he ordered their arrest, despite the fact that they have been indicted by the National Assembly?
