ASABA—DELTA State Comptroller of Prisons, Mr Sam Iyakoregha, has appealed to the state  government to assist in addressing the deplorable  prison facilities in the state and lack of operational vehicles to convey inmates to court.

Iyakoregha, who is new in the state, made the appeal when he  visited the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor, in his office in Asaba.

Lamenting the deplorable state of facilities across the prison formations in the state, Iyakoregha noted that the Warri Medium Security Prisons built to accommodate  307 inmates, now accommodated over 1,500 inmates who sleep under deplorable  and inhuman conditions.

He said: “One of the reasons inmates are said to be hardened upon their release back to society is the deplorable prison conditions,” adding that inmates at Kwale and Sapele Prisons were conveyed to court for trial with private vehicles with attendant security risk as a result of lack of operational vehicles in the formations.
