CALABAR—ELDER Okon Isuambuk, a candidate for the position of the President of the Management Committee of the University of Calabar Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, was Wednesday morning abducted by some persons and taken to an unknown destination.
Isuambuk, who is the Medical School Librarian and member of the Management Committee of the Cooperative Society, was reportedly abducted at his residence in the university’s staff quarters by armed gunmen and have not been heard from since.
A friend of Isuambuk, Emangha Bassey, told Vanguard that the man was a front runner in the race for the post of President of the Cooperative Society, but that some forces were against his emergence.
He said: “He had received several warnings through phone calls and some through physical confrontations that if he emerged victorious he would not be alive to serve his tenure, but he remained undaunted. That may be the reason he was kidnapped.”
Eyo Effiong, Information Officer of the institution, said he was not aware of Isuambuk’s kidnap.
