NDDM raises alarm over flood menace

By Godwin Oghre

Sapele—A group of ex-militants in the Niger Delta region,  Niger Delta Development Movement, NDDM, yesterday raised alarm that some Ijaw communities along the coastal area were on the verge of being submerged by flooding, occasioned by the opening up of a canal that leads to the Atlantic Ocean by the Federal Government and Chevron Nigeria Limited.

The group in a statement by its National President, Paul Toruwei, appealed to the Federal Government to, “Intervene and immediately close the canal causing the flooding and general environmental degradation in the coastal communities, particularly, Tsekelewu and Polobuboi in Egbema Kingdom, Warri North Local Government Area of the State.”

The flooding and environmental degradation, are according to the group, “caused by the opening of the canal from  the Atlantic Ocean by the Federal Government  as well as Chevron Nigeria without considering the danger and harm the canal will cause the people of the area which is not doing our communities any good.”

The group has urged the Federal Government and the oil company to, without further delay, dredge and sand fill the two communities mostly affected, to avoid their being wiped away by flood, adding “As we speak, people are packing out of the two communities as all their means of livelihood have been destroyed.”
