Change begins with me: Start from the executive – Vanguard readers

By Clifford Ndujihe
TO ensure its seriousness with the ‘Change Begins With Me’ campaign, majority of online readers of Vanguard wants the campaign to start from the executive arm of government, which is one of the least probed arms of government.

While launching the campaign at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on September 8, President Muhammadu Buhari called on Nigerians to embrace the campaign for a better and progressive Nigeria.

He urged all citizens to always resist the temptation of doing things the old way, saying that Nigerians must exhibit the virtues of honesty and hard work in all their interactions.

According to him, Nigeria is passing through a challenging moment where hardly anything works in a normal manner, a problem he attributed to negative attitudes and total breakdown of the nation’s core values over the years.

“It is safe to say today that honesty, hard work, Godliness have given way to all kinds of manifestations of lawlessness and degeneration in our national life. This is why we have among our cardinal objectives ‘change’, which implies the need for a change of attitude and mindset in our everyday life.change-buhari

“I need not mention the serious effort we have engaged in since the inception of this administration on the fight against corruption in our public life. With the progress we have so far made in that regard, we feel the need to ensure that we put in place the necessary sustainable framework for action and measures that will help to entrench and consolidate the progress achieved so far. This, we believe, can best be maintained through attitudinal change and the change of our mindset in private and public life,” he said.

Asked ”where should ‘Change Begin With Me’ start from?” over 70 per cent of Vanguard’s online readers said the campaign should start from the executive, that is the presidency led by President Buhari.

A total of 1144 readers answered the question with 752 (70.3 per cent) of them fingering the executive as the starting point. The Executive followed by the Legislature (257 readers, 24 per cent); Nigerians themselves (197 readers, 18.4 per cent); the Judiciary (193 readers, 18 per cent).

Sixty readers (5.6 per cent) were not interested in answering the question and two were undecided.
