Without a wholesome or complete revelation of the vastness of God’s names, a believer is limited and disadvantaged. That ignorance undermines the joy that awaits us- the appropriation of all the benefits and comforts of redemption that rightly belongs to God’s children. Indeed, not understanding or misunderstanding who God is, is a dangerous dereliction….” with these words from the foreword by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the General Overseer of Action Chapel International Ministry, Accra, Ghana, I introduce you to this powerful book entitled His Name Is….Over 2000 Names of My God written by Folorunsho Alakija.

With a colourful cover page with the image of the author wrapped with a cloth that bears the different names of God, the powerful woman of God and seasoned Evangelist who has benefited immensely from her knowledge of the names of God and wants others to enjoy the blessings too, in the 109 page book attempts to bring to the fore the names of God from different parts of the world, in different languages and dialects to show how important it is for Christians to know who they serve, the benefits and also passing it on to generations to come.

Segmented into 12 chapters for easy understanding, the woman of God started in the first chapter with Who is God. Here, she tries to explain who God is, describibg Him as “an entity we cannot physically see, hear, or touch, and so He is a mystery to most people.” She went on to describe God in many other ways and taking a Biblical journey, she mentioned the other attributes of God and where it can be found in the Bible. Eg The creator of Heaven and earth, Gen. 1:1 and 2:4. He is not a man, Numbers. 23:19 and many others.

In chapter two, she looked at the power in the name of God, and highlights the  importance of names in the old testament times and the new testament. According to her, “in scripture, a name connotes purpose, authority, make-up and character pointing out that God has a name for every situation we find ourselves in”. She then outlined some of God’s name as it reflects the various situations like I am That I am- Exodus 3:14,  I am the first and last- Rev. 22: 13 and others.

In chapter 3, she mentioned  91 names of God in Hebrew, eg Abba Father- Rom.15  El Gibbor-Isaiah 9:6 Elohay Shalom- Heb. 13:20, El Simchath Gili- Psalm 43:4. While 237 names of God in English and where they can be found in the Bible were stated in  chapter 4. Eg Our Sanctuary- Ezekiel 11:16; All in all- Col.3:11; Fortress- Jer. 16:19; Kings of Kings- 1Tim. 6:15 and others.

Chapters 5 and 6 took care of 108 of God’s names in Ibibio and 37 names of God in Igbo. Eg AbasiIma Ye Emen,- 2 Cor.13:11, Itiat Nsinsi,- Matt. 21: 44. Oje na Mmuo, – Acts 2:1-5, Oloro Ihe loro Ihe,- Jer.32:27, Otimbodombo,- Job. 36:5 and others.

Chapters seven takes a look at about 104 names of God in Hausa, eg Ubangiji Allah,-Gen. 3:4,  Allah Mai Girma,- Gen. 49:24, Ragona Allah, -John 1:29,  Allah Mai Iko, – Psalm 61: 11. Chapter 9  where the author exhibited her skill as a true Yoruba woman, she  mentioned 495 names of God in Yoruba eg Agbara To Bori Agbara, – Exo. 9:16,  Apata Aiyeraye,- Psalm 16:46, Arugbo Ojo, – Daniel 7:22, Oba Oke, – Psalm 95 :3, Olori Aye,- John 1:1-2, Olorun Awon Olorun, -Rev. 19:16 and many others. Other Nigerian languages like Edo, Efik and Ikwerre were captured in Chapter 9. While in  Chapter 10, the author did a very good research that produced  a comprehensive list of 217 names of God in Ghanian languages like Akupem, Ewe, Ga, Ghanaian Hausa.

Chapter 11 captured God’s name in other international languages like Spanish, Filipno(Tagalog), French, Italian, Indonesia, Swahili and Zulu and finally, chapter 12 takes care of  about 108 names of Jesus Christ like Advocate, Alpha and Omega, Rose of Sharon, Son of David, Mighty One, Mediator  etc.

A product of good research  by someone who wants to lift the burden of many through prayer, but more research is required to make up in the list in some major languages.
