Lagos—THE Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, has lampooned Governor Akinwumi Ambode and the All Progressives Congress, APC, for what it described as the deliberate act of delaying council polls in the state since October 2014.
It accused the APC-led government of delaying the elections as a plot to mismanage the council funds.
In a statement by its publicity secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, the party accused state executive and the House of Assembly of being culpable in the deliberate delay.
The party argued that “the continual running of the councils by nomenclature of executive secretaries and now sole Administrators is alien and unintended by the constitution. The operation is contrary to sections 1(2) 1(3) and 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
According to section 1(2), ‘the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed, nor shall any person or group of persons take control of the government of Nigeria or any part thereof, except in accordance with the provisions of this constitution.”
The party also kicked against the constitution of councils in the state saying they “remain undemocratic, illegal and act of treasonable felony.”
It said “relevant enforcement agencies should thus now arrest all the members of the House of Assembly, the Sole Administrators for aiding and abetting the treason. We also want the EFCC to probe the tenure of the sacked executive secretaries.”
While it issued a 21 days ultimatum to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC, to publish notice and guidelines for the polls, the party said failure to do so, it will “educate Lagosians to consider their dealings with the councils “as indeed continual dealings with the illegal councils would amount to participating in the lawlessness, brigandage and treason in our constitutional democracy.”
