Naval rating feared dead, another missing in Delta boat mishap

By Egufe Yafugbrhi

ONE rating of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Warri, was, yesterday, feared dead after one of the naval base boats reportedly capsized in the  Escravos area of Warri South-West Council, Delta State.

A senior naval officer, who confirmed the incident anonymously, told  Sunday  Vanguard that only one body had been found of the two naval personnel involved in the mishap.

Efforts to reach the Commander, NNS Delta, Commodore Raimi Mohammed, and Base Information Officer, Lieutenant Lamu, to give official confirmation proved abortive.

“It was not as a result of an attack. One of our boats during one of our operations in the Escravos area lost control and hit the shore. One person was said to be dead while another is still missing”, the source said.

A second source, however, said the rating did not die. “There is no record of death. I am very much in touch with happenings on the base. The information is that two of the personnel on the boat are still missing, but search is still on”, he said.
