20 die in Katsina auto accident, given mass burial

No fewer than 20 people lost their lives in a motor accident on the Daura-Kano Highway in Daura, Katsina State, in the early hours of yesterday. The Katsina Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Alhaji Abdu Bagadawa, disclosed that the accident occurred at Dadin-Kowa Village, 20 kilometres from Daura.

He said the accident involved a Toyota bus with number plates DRA 33 XA, and a Passat with number plates AA 993 MAN. Bagadawa explained that the two cars were speeding when they had a head-on collision as a result of wrong overtaking by one of the drivers. He said that the two vehicles caught fire and killed some of the occupants instantly, burning them beyond recognition.

Bagadawa said that 21 other passengers, who sustained various degrees of injuries, were taken to the Daura General Hospital for medical attention. The sector commander said that due to the nature of the accident, the dead people had to be given mass burial.

Bagadawa lamented the bad attitude of some motorists towards traffic regulations in spite of the enlightenment efforts of FRSC. He said: “You will bear me witness that two days ago we held an enlightenment campaign at NARTO Motor Park in Katsina. We will not be discouraged, we will continue with our efforts until we achieve our goal.” He pleaded with motorists to protect peoples’ lives by abiding with traffic rules.
