SON urges electricity meter manufacturers to adopt MANCAP

By Iloaze Blessed-Odidi

THE Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, has urged electricity meter manufacturers to embrace the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, MANCAP.

The call was made by the Assistant Chief Engineer of SON, Mr. Dosumu Tamiami, at the just concluded, Manufacturing Partnerships for African Development, MPAD. He said: “due to the selfish nature of manufacturers, most manufacturers go into this without any form of regulatory advice and end up producing, hazardous meters.”

He called on the distribution companies, DISCOs, to join hands with SON in order to eradicate low quality meters, and inspect these meters before the acceptance of the products to reduce the level of electricity mishaps in Nigeria.

Tamiami noted that when the meters carry currents above their capacities, it results electricity accidents and many more if not stopped. As a result, he urged manufacturers to undergo MANCAP for their locally made electricity meter. He argued that SON alone cannot reduce these incidents, and called on consumers to observe products distributed to them to check electricity calamities.
