The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has assured the organizers of President Cup Football competition of his Ministry’s full support in achieving grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
The minister stated this when he received in audience the committee members of the President Cup Football competition in his office in Abuja.
Barrister Dalung, promised to give his modest support and contribution wherever the assistance of the Ministry is needed, adding that the vision is in line with grassroots sports development.
He remarked that the era of concentrating on elite sports was over as that is not healthy for sports development.
Earlier, the leader of the Committee on the President Cup Football competition, Dr. Ike Neliakwu informed the Minister that the tournament was established in 2013 to encourage grassroots sports development in Nigeria. He said the first edition of the cup was held in 2014.
He stated that the football competition was organized from the level of local government area through states to federal level. He further explained that the President of the country is the grand patron of the President Cup, the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports is the official patron, while the Permanent Secretary is the Tournament Ambassador.
High point of the event was the investiture of the Honourable Minister as the official patron of the competition.
