Idoma groups express worry over Abba Moro’s detention

BY PETER DURU, MAKURDI

Pan Idoma union, the Opiatoha K ‘Idoma, has expressed worry over the  continued detention of former minister of interior, Comrade Abba Moro by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, without trial, alleging plot by the present administration to eliminate him.

Moro was arrested by EFCC on Monday after successfully stirring the re-election of Senator David Mark at the Benue south senatorial rerun election, as Director General.

In a statement by the Secretary General of the group, Chief Adoka Adaji, the umbrella body insisted that Moro’s detention was political, saying, “we are quick to say that Moro is suffering nothing but political vendetta orchestrated by the ruling party”.

“Nothing calls for his continued detention as he has always obeyed EFCC invitation, we urge that he should be charged to court of competent jurisdiction, anything short of this amounts to a breach of his fundamental human rights”.

On its part, the Idoma Collective, IC, a body of intellectuals, through it’s secretary, Dr. Adakole Elijah, urged the EFCC to charge the former Minister to court within the stipulated constitutional requirement of 24 hours or release him unconditionally.

Dr. Elijah threatened that the IC would mobilise 1000 youth to the EFCC if Moro was not released or charged to court.

He said, “we will not have our hands folded and watch them destroy the constitution of Nigeria. The operationality of the EFCC must be predicated on the operationality of the 1999 constitution.

“If other Nigerians have been arrested and charged to court within 48 hours there is no reason for the EFCC to hold unto Abba Moro for eternity. If you fail to follow the constitution then you are breeding anarchy which will not exclude anybody, including EFCC operatives.”
