A 36-year-old driver, Sakiru Ogunbode, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing diesel worth N1.1 million.
Ogunbode, who is facing trial on a charge of stealing, however, denied committing the offence. The Prosecutor, Insp. Gbemileke Agoi, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 9, 2015 at AP Depot, Ijora, Lagos. Agoi said that the accused, a driver, was asked to deliver 8,726 litres of Automative Gas Oil (Diesel), valued at N1.1 million, belonging to L n K Petroleum Nigeria, Ltd.
He said that Ogunbode, instead went to oil bunkers, sold the diesel and absconded. The prosecutor said the accused was later traced and arrested. He said the offence contravened Section 285 (9) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 285 prescribes seven- year jail term for offenders.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Ola Ogunbiyi, asked the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 15 for mention.
