Baro condemns attack on Delta Shopri

ASABA—SUSPENDED Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, Mr Henry Baro, yesterday, condemned the destruction of Effurun Shoprite by rampaging youths last week Friday.

Baro, on what transpired between him and two naval ratings who were on guard at the shopping mall, said some youths came to his rescue while he was being molested by the plain clothes officers.

The suspended council boss who spoke with newsmen in Asaba, said that one of the naval ratings crossed over to meet him where he was sorting out issues with a fleeing trailer driver who brushed his car at Niger Cat on Army Barracks Road but was held up by traffic at the Effurun roundabout.

Saying that the driver who blamed the accident on his assistant, was apologizing to him when “a plain clothes naval rating whose identity was not known until much later, walked in to me and asked me who I was. In a very humble manner I asked if I could know him.

“He flared up, brought out a dagger, held me by the throat and said if I dared say one more word, he would stab me. While this was going on, he had beckoned on his colleague also on plain clothes who joined him with a riffle threatening to shoot me.

“With a gun to my head, they pulled me by my shirt across the road to the shopping mall, which attracted some of our youths who immediately came in protest to rescue me.”

He  said that the peaceful protest was, however, hijacked by youths trading at the roundabout who were not indegenes of the area. He said they stormed the place, destroyed and looted some items.

“This act, I strongly condemn in its totality. Effurun Shoprite is my pet project, a project that I hold dear to my heart and could not have masterminded its destruction for any reason whatsoever.”

He regretted what the accident and the fracas between him the naval ratings led to, adding that it was never intended.
